Hayman Reece Hitch Step Review

Hayman Reece Hitch Step Review

The Hayman Reece Hitch Step is a very simple product made to fix a very simple problem. What it does, it does well, but it’s not all great.

To start off with, we do love this product. It’s name lives up to it’s ability, and it’s a quick and simple way to give yourself an additional step up into the back of your vehicle. We purchased this because after the fridge is on top of the drawers in the back of the Prado it’s hard for me to see much inside it. For my wife it’s completely impossible (good things do come in short packages though). This step gives me another place to stand when getting into the fridge, lets me get to the roof easier and is also a great platform when trying to wash the car.

What we like about it

Towing with this, while possible, is not the best idea if you have to reverse your trailer anywhere. Because the wings on the step stick out so far (for good reason – there’s no point having a narrow step) when you turn your trailer it can push against the wings of the step. If you’re not going too far and not turning much this isn’t a problem, but something like reversing a van or trailer into a parking spot, it will push, and something will move or give way.

Also be careful when it’s wet. While it does have a textured top, the grip still isn’t the best with shoes.Towing with this, while possible, is not the best idea if you have to reverse your trailer anywhere. Overall

From their website, they have these claims. Some are good, some… not quite so right.

  • Easy to install, 4 bolts and you’re done
    Completely true!
  • Fits virtually any towbar, with a flat sided tow ball mount
    Yep, right again.
  • Aluminium construction, that is light-weight, corrosion resistant and looks great on the back of your car
True, but I’m not sure that “looks great” is the best description.
  • High-grip non-slip step, keeping you safe in the wet
  • Well.. not as much. It’s better than flat metal, but it still isn’t great for some shoes.
  • Raised upper lip to prevent you sliding off
True and is actually very useful. It’s saved me more than once.
  • Trailer ready, no need to remove the step when you’re towing
Sort of true. Only really true if you stick to relatively straight lines with no angles in your towing.
  • Weight rated to 120kg
Not bad for us hefty guys.

If you need an additional step up at the rear of your vehicle, we would recommend this highly. Just keep in mind that towing with it can be tricky, and it might not be the best idea to leave it on in all conditions.
